Fabulous & Fearless Feature

Wednesday, January 28, 2015

Today on Fabulous & Fearless Feature I m very excited to introduce Vanessa. She is one of the first bloggers I started following. She is a true fashionista with unique and edgy style who has been a huge inspiration. In the Fall of 2010, Vanessa began writing fashion articles for FACTIO Magazine which ultimately led to the idea of her amazing blog – What Would V Wear. I hope you enjoy getting to know Vanessa as much as I did.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Vanessa, but my friends call me “Vanis”. I have been fashion conscious since my early childhood. At the tender age of three I could already be found walking around in elaborate dresses, which certainly paved my way as a little fashionista.
I was born and raised in Europe hence I was exposed to a variety of artistry and cultures that I now incorporate in my fashion and own style mantra. My enduring fascination with fashion led me to the creation of extravagance designs; and to wear clothing that is beyond the mainstream.
Do you think there is a difference between “fashion” and “style”?
I certainly do, yes. Fashion is the relationship to the external, meaning “What’s out there?!”, “What’s new?!”, etc. Fashion distracts, style connects. Style is something that you either have or not. It comes from within. You don’t always have to have the latest fashion in order to be considered stylish. You need to find your own voice. Style is a way to create a closer relationship with yourself.

If you were a fashion designer, what style of clothing or accessories would you design?
I love this question since I am actually a fashion designer. I graduated with honors and received my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Fashion Design in 2010. I’m currently working on a line coming out this summer. I’ve been recognized for my polished mix of sharp, clean lines and intelligent tailoring in the Chicago area.

What advice could you give to someone aspiring to get into blogging and world of fashion?
Be authentic and be patient. Success doesn’t happen overnight. Be dedicated and work hard. Also, don’t compare yourself to other bloggers – it will only discourage you. Always focus on yourself and find ways to stand out!

What is your favorite thing about your chosen career? Why?
Firstly, it means that I have a lot of clothes to wear. I remember always searching for special clothes that would suit me in color, fit, etc. but I didn’t always find them, so for me, being a fashion designer is first and foremost my ability to design clothes for myself that will express my own individuality, and of course, the ability to share them with all of you. However, my actual full-time job is in the Governmental Services field which I also love! I work with a wonderful team, and I couldn’t be happier to be in a position that allows me to pursue other interests as well, such as fashion.

What advice could you give to someone who wants to feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin?
It all starts with thinking positively. If you want to feel comfortable in your own skin, then you have to start thinking about the best thing that can happen to you instead of always expecting the worst. Any time you catch yourself thinking negatively, fight your negative thoughts with at least two or three positive ones. Make an effort to rationalize your negative thoughts away and to expect good things to happen to you; the more you expect good things to happen, the more they will.
Further, make it an effort to develop confidence. Confidence comes from within, and developing your confidence means feeling good about who you are, where you are, and what you have to bring to the table.Developing confidence may take a lifetime but you can start NOW to make a commitment to start changing the way you feel about yourself.

What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
To never give up, and that God always comes first.

If you didn’t need to work for income, what would you do with your time?
I’d be blogging all day! LOL
No, I would spend more time with my family and travel the world together.

You have a beautiful son, how do you manage blogging, working and motherhood?
Thank you. My son just turned 3 and he’s a lot of fun! My son, Kingston, is usually with me when I have my photo shoots. He always makes me laugh which is why you see me laughing/smiling so much! To manage it all I think it truly depends on a great support system which would be my husband in my case. He’s my biggest help and supporter and I certainly wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for him. Also, time management is super important. My days are literally structured to every single minute of a day which helps me and my family tremendously.

Vanessa, Thank you so much for sharing your answers with me and Letters to LALA land.

Travel: 10 reasons to visit Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Thursday, January 22, 2015

To kick off the Travel Diary Series  First up Sarajevo! Sarajevo is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. I could be a little bias because this is home for me but I think is more that that. The architecture, the culture, the food, the atmosphere, the people is what makes Sarajevo such a magical place. Sarajevo is the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and even after the devastating war that tore through the country, Sarajevo stands strong and ready to impress. In 1984 Sarajevo was the home of the winter Olympics.

Every place I visit I try and pick something up to remind me of my travels. I collect anything from magnets, travel mugs and shot glasses.
Attractions  you should visit while in Sarajevo:
1) Bascarsija (Old town, featuring old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city. It was built in the 15th Century and it features old restaurants, coffee and hookah shops and shopping)
2) Vrelo Bosne (Natural spring of river Bosnia. Beautiful natural park, featuring restaurants, rivers and bridges, horse carriage rides, paddles boats and endless walkways with beautiful views)
3) Old Town/ Stari Grad ( Historical part of town featuring old architecture, beautiful restaurants featuring traditional Bosnian cuisine, beautiful mosques and cathedrals.)
4) Winter Olympic Park
5) Historical Mosques and Catedrals ( There is numerous, breathtaking Mosques and Cathedrals in Sarajvo. I would deffinately visit: Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel in Sarajevo)
5a) Museums and art galleries (Since this is an old city there is a lot of history t be show cased. I  would visit : Gallery 11/07/95, Sarajevo History Museum, Bezistan Museum, and Muzeum of Alija Izadbegovic.)
(Satajevo, Stadium Kosevo, 2012)
(Bascarsija, 2012)
(Remembering Olympics in from of BBI, 2012)
(Vjecna Vatra, Importal Fire, 2013)
Restaurants and Coffee shops you should definitely visit:
1) Burgedzinica Bosna. I eat at this place almost on daily basis while in Sarajvo. Its serves quality, delicious Bosnian pastry called Burek, it is a beef pie. They serve all traditional types of Bosnian pitas (filled pastries). I can not say enough great things about this place. A must try.
2) Morica Han. Traditional Bosnain restauran located in heart of Bascarsija. They serve traditional food and the restaurant is decorated reflecting old school traditions. This place serves superb food and it will give you a great view back in time.
3) Cevabdzinica Zeljo. Possibly THE BEST Cevapi ever. Chevapi are a grilled dish of minced meat, a type of kebab.
4) Tavola. Anything from delicious pastas to mouthwatering steak can be gotten here. I have tried numerous plates here over the years, and still have to have one I wasn't in love with.
5) Avaz Twist Tower restaurant. Delicious upscale restaurant. Service is great, wine was to die for and food was delicious. Great for date night.

Night life, bars and coffee shops worth visiting:
1) Dibek. One of my ALL time favourite places in the world. Dibek is an old school coffee shop, that serves anything from traditional Bosnain coffee to lattes, juices and Hookah. My family and friends know that answer to "where should we go tonight/Today" is always Dibek. YOU MUST VISIT THIS PLACE.
2) Vatra. Located in central Sarajevo serving mouth watering deserts and any drink you can come up with. Worth all the calories!
3) Hacijenda. A moden lounge, with amazing drinks and finger food. Start your night off with some good conversation and they will have you dancing in no time.
4) Sloga. Local pub with music for everyone. Depending on the night, you can hear anything from EDM, Hip Hop, Bosnian music, Top 40 or watch one of the amazing bands preforming. This two floor tavern is great for dancing or just hanging out.
5) Central. One of many bars with outside seating area and great atmosphere inside.

Its hard to pick the top 5 places out of all amazing sites and restaurants to visit.  Sarajevo is a magnificent city, worth visiting and exploiting.

Have you ever been? Do you agree with my list?

FABULOUS & FEARLESS FEATURE

Wednesday, January 21, 2015

Today, I’m especially excited about a new weekly series called Fabulous & Fearless Feature. Every Wednesday, for next eight weeks I will feature one amazing women and share their stories with you. While working on them, I kept running into the living room to tell my friend the surprising things these amazing women were revealing. Reading their answers shows how wonderful these women really are. In the upcoming eight weeks they will share their insights in fashion, careers and their take on some of the issue women are facing today.
Thank you so much to all the incredible women who shared their stories.

First up, the most amazing person I know; my sister and my best friend.  She is one of funniest and more ridiculous people I know; never afraid of a challenge, always willing to offer a helping hand and one person that never says no when offered food.
Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?
I am a first year ESL and Physical Education teacher. Volleyball, shopping, and trying new food are some of my favorite hobbies

What advice could you give to someone aspiring to become a teacher?
Be yourself, everyone else is taken! Don't be afraid to take a chance if you think the students will benefit from it. I know it can be scary to stray away from the tradition, but it is usually worth it! Change is good! I would encourage you to get to know your students beyond the classroom. If you know what their hobbies and interests are outside of the classroom, you can use that information to engage them in your lessons. Lastly, practice what you preach. Students will call you out if you are breaking a rule they are supposed to follow!
Do you stick to conventional fashion or like to try and be original?
As mentioned above, I follow what is trending, but I do like to add a hint of Elvisa to every outfit. Currently, I am loving statement necklaces, but I like to mix and match styles most people wouldn't typically pair together.
What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
"If it's important to you, you will find a way. If it's not, you will find an excuse" or "Don't make someone a priority if they treat you like an option."

What do you love most about yourself?
A question (almost) everyone struggles to answer.. I would have to say my curiosity to get to know people and to  hear their story... and I guess I do like my eyebrow shape ;)
What advice could you give to someone who wants to feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin?
First you must love yourself, before you can love anyone else!  If someone doesn't like the way you look on the outside, then they sure don't deserve to get to know you on the inside, let alone love you!

Thank you for sharing your answers with me and Letters to LA LAland.

OOTD: Prime & proper

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

Having to dress up every day can be demanding... soon enough you run out of things to wear. Clean lines and basics are probably account for some of my favourite outfits.  This Lululemon skirt has to be one of the most comfortable skirts I have ever owned; its like wearing yoga pants in a skirt form.

Skirt: Lululemon || Shirt: Banana Republic || Necklace: handmade || Purse: vintage Versace || Shoes: Aldo

What is your basic go to outfit?

OOTD: hoodie & jeans

Wednesday, January 7, 2015

I am very much a girly girl, that loves dresses and high heels, however when I am on the run (which is often now days), I love me some jeans & a hoodie. Between a full time job, soccer and attempt to keep some sort of social life, hoodies and converse fit the bill when on the go. With Edmonton's unseasonably warm weather, wearing a leather jacket out is awesome; I will take no huge winter coat any time. What is your go to casual outfit?

Hoodie: borrowed || Jeans: Zara || Shoes: Converse || Jacket: H&M || Purse: Celine

New year, new-ish me.

Tuesday, January 6, 2015

I think its important to have goals and plans; I also think its important to revisit those plans and tweak them to make them possible. Setting goals and making plans is only great if you actually put them into action. New Year resolutions are usually a great place to start....while back, I wrote about some things I wanted to before I get to 30. It is a pretty specific list of things I wanted to do; while visiting Sarajevo I also stumbled on my very old "100 things to do you die" list.

So I thought to kick off 2015 with a new resolution; finish all the things on the list.

Here is the original list (translated from Bosnian):
[and please, be nice, this was part of a year end project for my high school; I was also 13 when I wrote this! Some things were very important back then.. like dying my hair black. ha! Fanny enough, few of those things overlap with my 10 before 30 list]

I have gotten to few of these things, I also have quite a few to get to.
So here is to New Year and new resolutions. What are your New Years Resolutions?

2015

Monday, January 5, 2015

Hello my lovelies,
Each new year brings so much promise, so much hope for the start of a new year.  Often you find its the times people examine the things they'd like to change and actively set goals to do so. This year, as many of you, I plan to do things a little bit different, starting with fashion.  In regards to fashion and shopping, I've vowed to only purchase things that I truly love and actually need. I am a strong believer that retail therapy is answer to everything, however its nor economical nor practical for me. I own too much clothes and shoes and don't have enough space to keep it all.  More often than I'd like to admit, I end up buying things that don't fit perfectly , its not exactly what I am looking for because of some minor detail that isn't quite right.  Those things then sit in the closet, get moved around and then get donate to Salvation Army.
I am not 100% sure how I will accomplish this, since I am very much of an impulse buyer and have never returned anything I bought. As of now this is my plan:
  • Do research. This way I will know what exactly I want, limiting my search and chance of getting something I don't really need.
  • Save money and buy what I really want/need, not the "well its kinda similar" item.
  • Avoid window shopping. a) I never got the concept b) zero will power, if I am at the mall I am buying something.
  • Buy versatile items. no that one sparkly shirt or skirt with pockets that I will wear once.
  • Avoid malls + online shopping. This is me unsubscribing myself to all e-mails and alerts. If I don't know about a sale or new things, I am less likely to go shopping.
What are your new years resolutions? Any helpful tips on not buy things on impulse?

get to know me fact: I own over 100 of heels. (yes I have a problem)
