How I’m Getting Organized in 2019

Thursday, January 31, 2019

2019 is THE year, or so I keep telling myself. 2019 is already shaping up to be full of big things – In March I will be moving into my new home and I'd love to kick off this new chapter in my life with a clean slate and by doing this hopefully setting myself up for success; both personally and professionally; and in big part for me, success starts with organization.
If you have followed Letters to LA LA Land you know that I'm at my best when I take control of the things (as much as possible). Yes that makes me a little bit of a control freak but I’ve found myself at my happiest when things are in control and organized. So here are three ways I’m getting organized for 2019:
DECLUTTER & FIND A SPOT FOR EVERYTHING
Everyone and their dog s talking about Marie Kondo and with this move now was the perfect time to declutter those closets, cabinets, & junk drawers in your life. I read both of her books (if books are not your thing, I highly recommend her show on Netflix) and have started with her method. While it was unnatural for me to approach things that give me joy and thank things for their service, I did find that her method helped me made strides in getting rid of things that I did not think possible.
A big challenge for me what not to just clean up and declutter but to adjust my life style going forward. Now when I am buying things, I make sure they have a spot to be in or I don't buy it. I know its not realistic to expect a perfectly clean and organized home at all times but getting to a point that my home is 5-10 minutes away from being guest ready all times if what I'm starving for.
SELF CARE AND ROUTINE
This is another place where its not a one time thing but more of a life style change . Finding morning and evening routines isn't hard, but sticking to those is hard. I took a mental note of things that I did, or didn't do, that made a difference in how I felt and from there came up with things that will form my new routine.I started making my bed every morning and it made a huge difference in how I started and ended my day. If I had a bad day at work, I came home to a made bed and it made me feels safe and happy.  If I had  a great day, my day was made even better by going to bed and my bed was made. This goes back to control - this is one thing I can control and it made a huge difference in my mood. Getting into a habit of doing a mask every Sunday, taking a long bath once  a week, switching my laptop off an hour before bed - or anything that will allow you to take some me time goes a long way. Whatever your routine is, if you stick to it, you will feel refreshed and ready to take on your day. While its not realistic to expect that you will follow your routine 100% of the time, as long as do it more often than not you will be in a better place
WRITE IT DOWN
Events, meetings, appointments, to -do list whatever it is write it down. Unless you have super duper great memory, if you don't write it down you will forget- this will cause you to be stressed, miss deadlines and snowball the feeling of "my life is out of control". I m old school, so I write everything down in a physical agenda, and while its nowhere near perfect system, writing things down made a 100% different on how ready I am for the week . Google calendar or any virtual calendar with reminders will work as well - I like Google calendar as you can color coordinate and invite people to events, set reminders which all make your life easier.
