The History of Our Beloved Blue Jeans

Thursday, January 28, 2021

In an age where a high percentage of individuals disagree about almost everything, one thing is for sure, and that is that we all love wearing jeans. This is a clothing niche that has come an incredibly long way. It is suggested to be the fashion trend that has lasted longer than any other fashion trend in human history. The concept of jeans was originally introduced by Levi Strauss on the 20th of May 1873, in San Francisco. So let’s have a look at how Levi Strauss and Co. was founded all those years ago.

The founders

Levi Strauss was an innovative, motivated business owner who moved to San Francisco to open a west coast branch of his brothers' dry goods business. He was approached by a Nevada tailor who had unintentionally given him a concept of what may be the most popular piece of clothing in today's time. The patent was registered on the 20th May 1873 and is such a large part of our history that it is still known as the birth of the blue jean. Jacob Davies was the inventor of the idea and came up with the blue jean concept as he noticed the pants from those days tore quite easily while doing physical labor in the mining industry.

The Concept

As mentioned, the pants in those days didn’t last long. Most men were in the mining fields, working day in and day out to get as much gold as they could. One day he decided to put metal rivets at specific points of strain like pocket corners and the base of the zip. This change in the jeans led to the pants being much more durable. In fact, he was so impressed with it that he immediately got a patent for the idea, which meant that Levi Strauss and Co. was the only legal manufacturer of riveted clothing for over 17 years. This got the company off to an incredible head start as they obtained a lot of business from that one idea. For a long time, everyone referred to blue jeans as overalls because at the time the blue jean's name had not existed yet.

Jeans Manufacturers

After the patent that Levi Strauss and Co. registered had expired, they were no longer the exclusive manufacturers of riveted jeans. Other manufacturers quickly followed in pursuit of the blue jeans. Although they took the patent idea, they still came up with some new designs and innovative ideas to improve the style and quality of jeans even further.
