Book of the Month: Nasty Galaxy By Sophia Amoruso

From the creator of Nasty Gal and the #girlboss book, we have Nasty Galaxy. Let me just start by saying that we LOVE Sophia Amoruso! Read #girlboss for her version of how Nasty Gal came to be and our previous post on that book here. We think her attitude and message comes across loud and clear: work your ass off and the sky is the limit. Naturally when we saw the new hardcover book on Nasty Gal design, it was a must have!

When the news broke that Nasty Gal was filing for bankruptcy, it was disappointing. But not for the reason you might guess. We weren't disappointed in Amoruso, we were disappointed in all the people that will judge this #girlboss for appearing to fail. Unfortunately, because she was such an advocate for being a #girlboss and trying to share her success and what advice she might have - the world was watching and waiting for something just like this. But we say "forget those people!" With the speed and lack of experience this woman accelerated her Myspace page into million dollar business, she has still done something amazing. And we sure as hell haven't seen the last of her or her successes.

5 TV Shows With Girl Power!

It is so hard to find a show with a strong female lead, but this Spring something exciting has happened there are an amazing amount of shows that have just that, a strong female lead. I am so excited to share this list with you!

Girl Boss- This TV show is based on Sophia Amoruso's autobiography #Girlboss. If you are interested in reading the book check out our blog post here. Check out the show too, you will def want to binge watch the whole thing on Netflix.

13 Reasons Why- Now this show is controversial it touches on so many topics that aren't normally addressed in a teen drama, the main source of controversy though is that fact that it centres around a young teenage girls suicide. Whatever your opinion is on the topic, it still is a must watch! Binge watch this one on Netflix as well. 

The Handmaid's Tale- This show is amazing and I have already started watching it, I really wanted to wait and binge watch this show all at once but I just couldn't wait. How I described this show to my sister when I implored her to watch was it's like The Giver, meets Hunger Games kind of. Its based on a book by Margaret Atwood and you can check out our blog post on the book here. You can catch this show on Hulu in the US and on Bravo in Canada.

The Good Fight- This a spin off of The Good Wife, there is no Alicia but there is Diane Lockhart. She is basically all set to retire and then the worst possible thing happens. Her life savings are gone and she must now start all over again. It's a pretty good show, I must say after the rest of these shows this one ranks a little lower in my favs, but still a good law show. 

Feud- Starring Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon this show is about Bette Davis and Joan Crawford and how their feud started on the set of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? I'm not sure who those actresses are exactly but I do know who Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are and they are amazing actresses and since this is basically a show about cat fighting celebrities it should be good!

Harlots- So in my research on shows with women leads, I found this show. Harlots, is about exactly what the title implies, a brothel owner and her struggles during the 18th century in London. I had to watch a couple episodes before I could recommend this show, honestly after the first episode I was hooked. There is a lot of nudity and sex (so be warned if that's not your thing do not watch this) but it actually has a fascinating storyline.

Great News- This show should be interesting its about a mother who lands an internship at her daughters new job. It's a new show and I haven't gotten around to checking it out yet but a mother and daughter who work together sounds like a very funny show. Check it out on NBC on Tuesdays.

Dear White People- Another great Netflix binge watching show! I may or may not have already watched all of the episodes. This show which is based on a movie is also controversial I mean its all in the name. I love this show, its brutal honesty is refreshing. A lot and I mean A LOT of people do not like this show, just hop on twitter or even check out the reviews on IMDb. Love it or hate check it out and let us know what you think.

Pretty Little Liars- I had to mention this show even though its been on the air for 7 seasons and I have mentioned it before. It has to get an honourable mention because the show is coming to an end! Its sad but its ending at a good time. I will miss the plot twists and turns and of course the amazing fashion! Check out the show from the beginning if you haven't and then enjoy the finale which is coming soon.

Book of the Month: #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso

I picked this book up and couldn't put it back down until it was done! My eyes were burning and I was immediately in love with Sophia. Not because she is this incredibly successful fashion icon or that she wrote a motivational memoir/self help type book - but because this chick is bad ass, hilarious, and relatable.

Although I still wouldn't really call #GIRLBOSS a self help book, it's inspiring and her ambition is contagious. Amoruso's natural strength and confidence serves as a reminder that you can and should be strong and confident too - just based on the fact that you are a woman and ARE powerful. She reinforces you to follow your instincts and dreams - societies restrictions and obstacles be damned.

Of course she throws in things that contributed to her success: some luck, natural talent for fashion, strong desire to do what made her happy (which included not working for "the man"), and others; all things that apply to our everyday lives and careers without being preachy in any sense of the word. It's easy to read, understand, and LOVE. Read it, read it right now!
