OOTD - OTK Boots and Green Skirt

Monday, October 31, 2016

I have been living in these OTK boots. I think I have worn them once a week over the last little while. The day we took the photos was the ideal fall day with the sun and fresh air, and leaves were falling. I paired the OTK boots with a short summer dress and layered it with a sweater.

5 Websites to Help You Plan a Trip

Friday, October 28, 2016

Winter is fast approaching and that always makes me want to travel and get away from the cold. Whether you are planning a getaway in November or dreaming of a longer-term trip, here are few resources you need for flights, accommodations, restaurants and even excursion that will help you plan the best trip:

Flights.
After doing a lot of research, I found that two of the best sites for cheap tickets are Kayak and Skyscanner.

Accommodations.
When booking accommodations there is so many options but two sites I end us using more often than any other are Airbnb and Trivago.
Trivago is great for ensuring you get the best hotel prices on your trip, as it lets you compare multiple hotels all at one and in one spot. I like AirBnb because it gives you and options to stay in local apartments or homes during your visit for a more authentic experience.

TripAdvisor.
I use Trip Advisor for all trips I have ever planned and taken. Its the best resource for reviews, things to do and see.

Surviving Alberta Winters

Thursday, October 27, 2016

When the snow arrives BEFORE the leaves finish falling . . . you know you are in Alberta. This year the snow came the first week of October, which is early even for us!  Over 147 accidents recorded in Edmonton alone on the first major snow fall. Not because no one knows how to drive in the snow (don't get me wrong, there are a bunch of meatballs behind the wheel) but because many of us didn't even have time to get the winter tires on! Note to people with 4X4 - it helps you accelerate, NOT STOP. So you should have winter tires too.
But winter months really aren't so bad! If it was, Alberta would be pretty empty. There's a few things I always do to keep the cold, dark months bearable - and a few things I want to try this year too!
Ski or Snowboard: Head to the closest hill or mountain and get moving! It's a great way to stay active and be outside. There are kids under 4 who can rip down a mountain with their little pies - so it's possible to do it at any age. Plus the views from the top of a mountain in the winter - UNBELIEVABLE. The hot tubs and chalets with booze are so much better at the end of the day too!

Snowmobiling: This is one of the things I haven't tried - I don't understand the fascination with riding different "vehicles" Especially without some type of enclosure to prevent my flying into the air possibly to my death. But are you a true Albertan if you haven't tried it?
Tropical Vacations: This has proven to be one of THE BEST ways to survive the winter. Even 3 days to somewhere with sun and heat really helps. Cuba, Mexico, Vegas, LA, Phoenix.

New Hobby: I picked up the Violin as a resolution last year. During the summer months it was almost impossible for my to pin myself down long enough to practice - but I've already started back at it now that inside is much more comfortable that outside.

How do you keep happy during the cold months? We can always use more ideas!

OOTD - Red Velvet Skirt

Wednesday, October 26, 2016

Suede and velvet are everywhere, and I absolutely love it. I picked this skirt up at Winners while back and have been wearing it nonstop. #YEG weather was nice enough to wear this outfit without nylons and a heavy jacket. This Simons vest has been my go to for layering, it is so versatile; considering its grey I think it will get very much use.

Top 5 Last Minute Costume Ideas for Halloween

Tuesday, October 25, 2016

If you are like me then you wait till the last minute to find a costume for Halloween. Maybe, you finally decided to attend the party you were invited to weeks ago or maybe you were roped into going to a party at the last minute either way you need a costume and fast. Here are some costume ideas that you can make from things that you already own.
source
Audrey Hepburn- her most infamous role was in Breakfast at Tiffany's and the costume is a classic and easy to recreate. All you need is a little black dress, a white pearl necklace, put your hair in a bun, you need minimum make-up with a classic cat-eye, the optional accessories you can include are black gloves, a jewel hair piece, and a make shift cigarette holder. You can make the cigarette holder from a paint brush, or an eyeliner pencil.
source
Cleopatra- This is also a classic Halloween look, I know many people go for this costume but the title didn't say unique. All you need for this look is a white dress it can be long or short i've seen both, a gold chunky necklace, really dramatic eye make-up, gladiator shoes or gold sandals, you can accessorize with gold necklaces and bracelets, use a gold necklace as a head piece. Optional things you can include are little pieces of colour whether in your hair or in the jewelry. I really like this costume especially the eye make-up so dramatic and you can really do a lot with it.
source
Bank Robber- This is an easy costume to create from items you already own, black and white strip shirt, black pants or jeans, black gloves (if you live in Canada you def have many pairs of gloves), black booties or shoes, you can make the money sac from a pillow case use black permanent marker to draw the dollar sign, you can also make the mask from an old pair of nylons or scrap black cloth you own or if you are crafty use black felt, you can also wear a toque (that's what we call winter hat's in Canada), finish the look off with some red lipstick because you still have to look fierce!
source
source
50s Girl Halloween Costume- Now you have two choices for this outfit, either the good girl or the rebel. For the rebel look you can wear tight skinnies, a black shirt, leather jacket, red heels and red lipstick. For the good girl look you can wear a poodle skirt, an A-line dress either with polka dots or if you don't just the style is enough, a hair bow, red lipstick, white pearls, and red heels, a scarf. Both looks require 50s make-up they are relatively the same, except one requires a more dramatic cat-eye i'll let you decide which one.
source
Wednesday Addams Costume- This is a classic goth look but at least it has a character attached to it, not just goth for no reason. I have to say the whole reason this costume appealed to me was the make-up looks you can do. There's different ways to achieve this look and you have creative license which is great.

What are your easy go to Halloween Costumes? What are you dressing up as this year?

4 Canadian Labels You Need to Know About Now

Friday, October 21, 2016

At Letters to LA LA Land we have always been all for shopping local, and fashion is no exception. Independent shops and designers often stock items which are made locally and aren't available elsewhere: by buying  a dress by a local designer and there is little chance of turning up to the office Christmas party wearing the same as someone else. In my books that is a huge plus. Today we rounded 4 of our favorite Canadian designers you should definitely check out.
If you follow us on social media, you heard Amy and I talk about how much we LOVE our Bano eeMee leather jackets. Bano eeMee is known for its luxurious hand burnished genuine leather jackets.

Workhall is all about creating statement pieces, that are uniquely beautiful and comfortable at the same time plus effortlessly chic.

Icone is one of the Simons in house brands. Its a women's urban meets chic line and you are going to love their stuff.

Smythe creates essential wardrobe pieces that are both modern and timeless. Anyone and everyone is wearing them (including Kate Middleton).

What are you favorite Canadian brands?

Beauty Products I Always Run Out Of and Must Rebuy

Thursday, October 20, 2016

There's always something that our beauty regime must consist of; the things we MUST have; the things we only run out of ONCE because we will never let it happen again.

Flash back to the first time I ran out of my go-to scrub and used something from under the sink. First of all - there's a reason those things live under the sink. We didn't LIKE them. Why we don't throw them out when we realize that is beyond me.  Results: major breakout and minor meltdown.

So here's a few thing's I always make sure to replace when they run out, or before if I'm on the ball.

Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub
Check it out here

Clear and exfoliated skin is super important! I use this scrub once a week to battle the blackheads. My skin feels fresh and super soft after every use which I crave.

Beeswax Lip Balm
Check it out here

I cannot handle chapped lips. Soft and kissable. That's what lips are supposed to be. Burt's Bees does the job - natural, spf, and doesn't taste like medicine.

Check it out here

These little hand creams come in the perfect size to pop in your purse (they come in a ton of other scents too). Warning - this lotion is fragrant! Super strong. But so effective in the battle against the cold months, the TERRIBLE public washroom hand soap stink, hand sanitizer moisture leechers, and smoker smell.

TV/Movies-Returning Fall Shows I Will Be Watching

Tuesday, October 18, 2016

I pick new shows every Fall that I find interesting from the synopsis and the trailer, thankfully the shows that I want to continue to watch have not been cancelled. Below are the list of shows that I will be continuing to watch into season 2.
source
Blindspot- The naked tattooed woman found in Time Square is back for season 2, the plot thickens. More corruption in the US Government being brought down. I love shows with mystery and puzzles, I am definitely watching season 2. I can't wait to see what happens, especially with Archie Panjabi joining the cast I loved her in The Good Wife can't wait to see how she does here.
source
Narcos- Pablo Escobar is back and probably killing and supplying people with drugs. I like this show because it's a true story, I am that nerd that loved history class so this show is right up my alley. I cannot wait to see how things unfold. This show does have a tendency to be gory and it gets to be too much, especially because you know it's based on truth, but the curiosity of seeing how it all unfolds overpowers that.
source
Quantico- Two words Priyanka Chopra, that brown goddess is back for more and I will be watching. Last season there was a conspiracy with Alex at the centre of it, this season there is a new mystery to solve. This time involving another US Government Agency the CIA. The plot is thickening and I am engrossed, I also keep missing clues. I think I may have to start putting my phone away while watching this show.
source
Lucifer- The devil is back, and he is as gorgeous as ever! Now, now don't think me so shallow as to think that I only watch this show for his smile. It's that attitude as well, and maybe the dynamic between Lucifer and Chole. The fact that he can't seem to charm her or bend her to his will as he can with everyone else is very intriguing. You know every woman's fantasy that she will be the one to turn the bad boy good, this show plays directly into that and I can't get enough!
source
Dr. Ken- Don't judge me but my boyfriend discovered this show a few weeks ago, we both loved it! It is so funny and it's a show we can watch together. Needless to say we flew thru season 1 and I am very happy to report that season 2 has just begun. Seriously if you love comedies, and good writing watch this show!

What shows are you watching? Any returnees I missed that you feel should have made the list?

OOTD - Dressing for Comfort

Monday, October 17, 2016

I gravitate toward wearing dresses and skirts but I like to be comfortable, and I can officially say I have mastered the ways to dress for comfort yet be stylish. Most people define comfort as wearing yoga pants and hoodies, and they completely rule out dresses.  I paired this Lululemon dress with pair of converse for a day of running errands. Who knew that wearing dresses for comfort is a thing?
